Application
Organobismuth compounds are environmentally friendly alternatives to heavy metal polyurethane catalysts such as organomercury and organolead. Bismuth octoate has technical properties very similar to organolead and can be used as an eco-friendly substitute catalyst for lead drying agents, with the following features:
1. Safe and environmentally friendly, can replace lead, mercury, and tin which are being legislated out;
2. Targeted catalytic effect on NCO/OH groups, effectively preventing side reactions of NCO groups and reducing CO2 generation;
3. Compared with organotin catalysts, it has better hydrolytic stability and reduced selectivity for reaction with water;
4. In water-based PU dispersions, it reduces side reactions between water and NCO groups, improving drying performance of coatings under harsh conditions such as high humidity, resulting in optimal final product performance.
5. In one-component systems, it acts as a surface sealer rather than promoting the reaction between NCO and water;
6. Synergistic effect when used in combination with bismuth zinc, making formulation and production more flexible, reducing energy consumption, and increasing profits;
7. Can be used alone or in combination with amines or other organometallic compounds.
Application Fields
1. In polyurethane synthesis, bismuth octoate acts as a catalyst to significantly accelerate the reaction between isocyanates and polyols, increasing reaction rate and molecular weight of products. For example, adding 0.1%~0.5% bismuth octoate in polyurethane coatings can significantly shorten curing time from 24 hours to less than 6 hours, while improving mechanical properties and weather resistance of the coating. It can be used in leather slurries, shoe sole raw materials, PU adhesives, PU coatings, PU elastomers, PU sponge materials, etc.
2. It can also be used in epoxy resin curing reactions, accelerating the crosslinking between epoxy groups and amine curing agents, shortening curing time, and improving curing speed and product performance.
3. In rubber vulcanization, bismuth octoate can significantly accelerate vulcanization, improving mechanical properties, heat resistance, and chemical resistance of vulcanized products. By adjusting catalyst dosage, hardness and flexibility of rubber can be precisely controlled to meet different application needs.
4. In organic synthesis, bismuth octoate acts as a catalyst to promote dehydration of alcohols to prepare olefins and ethers. Additionally, it performs well in esterification, hydrogenation, and certain types of polymerization reactions.
Usage
When used as a polyurethane catalyst, the addition amount is generally 0.05%-0.5% of the polyol component. It is not recommended to add to the isocyanate component due to gelation risk. Avoid open exposure during use.
